Dioxin Exposure Worsens Thyroid Function

Exposure to a group of highly toxic compounds known as dioxins can negatively affect thyroid function, a new study has found. Specifically, dioxin exposure was significantly associated with high thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) levels, an indication that the thyroid gland is not producing enough thyroid hormone.

Dioxins are primarily produced through industrial processes, including municipal waste incineration. About 90% of human exposure comes via food— mainly meat and other animal products— because dioxins are stored in fat tissue and build up in the food chain.

The study measured blood levels of 20 different dioxins and TSH in over 2,800 participants. Finding a connection between the presence of dioxins and thyroid dysfunction is a step forward from previous studies that had inconsistent results.

“Although more research on how dioxins affect thyroid function is needed, efforts to reduce exposure to dioxins and other toxic chemicals could help to reduce the risk of thyroid dysfunction and improve public health outcomes,” said Cheng Han, M.D., a lead researcher.

Vitamin D Deficiency May Raise Risk of Long COVID

Individuals with low vitamin D levels after being hospitalized for COVID-19 appear to be at a greater risk of developing long COVID, according to recent research. These new findings support several other studies showing a possible link between vitamin D deficiency and acute COVID-19 cases.

In the most recent study, researchers compared a group of adults who were diagnosed with long COVID within 6 months of hospital discharge with a control group who was also hospitalized for COVID-19 but did not develop long COVID.

At the 6-month follow-up, several variables were analyzed for each participant in each group. The only observable difference between the two groups was that the long COVID group had consistently lower vitamin D levels.

Vitamin D is naturally synthesized by the body when skin is exposed to sunlight, but those who spend a lot of time indoors may be deficient. In this case, a supplement containing vitamin D3 may be the most effective alternative. Lichen-based supplements are now available for those who wish to avoid animal-derived products.
